김종흥 원장은 1999년 영국 엘리자베스 여왕의 하회 마을 방문 당시 여왕의 생신을 맞아 축배주를 나누며 언론에 대서특필되었다

안동 목석원 장승공원 앞에 선 김종흥 원장

지난 1980년 하회마을로 이주한 김종흥 원장은 1990년 즈음 마을 입구에 장승공원을 건립했다. 김종흥 원장은 한국 문화 불모지였던 1980년 산업화 초기 시대에 한국 전통문화에 관심을 가지게 된 계기를 언급했다.
“원래 분재를 하다가 자연스럽게 목각을 시작하게 되었습니다. 하회마을의 탈이 1965년 국보로 지정되는 것을 보았습니다. 당시 우리 문화에 대한 일반인들의 관심은 적었지만, 언젠가 우리 문화에 대한 부흥이 일어날 것이라고 생각했습니다. 왜냐하면 우리 민속문화는 세계 어디서도 볼 수 없는 독특함과 자연의 질서와 인간존중 정신을 담고 있기 때문입니다.”

After moving to Hahoe Village in 1980, Mr. Kim Jong-heung built Jangseung Park at the entrance of the village in 1990. He mentioned the moment when he became interested in Korean culture in the early industrialization period of 1980, which was a time of wasteland.of Korean culture.
“I originally started woodcarving naturally when I was twenties. I saw that the Hahoe Maskdances of Hahoe Village was designated as national treasure in 1965. At that time, the general public’s interest in our culture was minimal, but I thought that someday we would see revival in our culture. This is because our folk culture is full of uniqueness, natural order and human respect that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.”

그의 생각처럼 1990년부터 하회마을에 매년 5만 명의 관광객이 방문해 한국 전통마을 문화를 체험하기 시작했다. 그리고 1999년 영국 엘리자베스 여왕의 하회마을 방문을 계기로 하회마을의 연간 방문객은 100만 명으로 증가했다. 관광객 증가에 따라 장승공원을 찾는 방문객도 기하급수적으로 증가했다.
목석원은 장승공원, 장승전시실, 휴게시실, 판매시설 등이 들어선 복합문화공간이다. 분재를 하면서 자연스럽게 목각 장인이 된 김종흥 원장은 예술적 재능이 뛰어난 예술인이다. 그는 독학으로 목각을 배워 우리 민족의 애환과 해학이 서린 다양한 모양의 장승을 조각해 장승공원을 건립했다.

He taught woodcarving by self-education, carved the various forms of myths and wisdom of our nation, and built Jangseung Park by himself.

1999년 영국 엘리자베스 여왕의 하회 마을 방문 행사에 김종흥 원장은 언론에 대서특필되어 한 때 유명세를 치르기도 했다. 그 계기에 대한 그의 설명이다.
“여왕께서 하회마을을 방문한 4월 21일이 생신이었습니다. 마침 제 생일도 그 날이었어요. 그날 생신상은 인간문화재가 차렸습니다. 그래서 누군가 여왕과 축배를 해야 했죠. 여왕과 생일이 같은 사람이 다섯사람이 있었습니다. 그 중의 한 사람이 저였는데, 제가 하회마을에 살고, 탈춤공연도 한다는 이유로 축배주를 들게 되었습니다. 저기 보이는 사진이 그때 촬영한 것인데, 제 일생에 영광입니다.”
하회마을에서는 엘리자베스 여왕 방문 20주년을 기념해 2019년 5월 11일부터 축제를 개최한다. 올해는 영국의 앤드류 왕자가 축제를 기념해 방문할 예정이다. 한편 5월 축제 때는 양반들이 부용대에서 즐기던 놀이인 선유줄불놀이가 안동의 밤 하늘을 장엄하게 수놓을 예정이다.

There were five people with the same birthday as the Queen. One of them was me, and I came to the toast because I lived in Hahoe village and performed a mask dance. The photo we saw there was taken at that time, and I am honored to be with her Majesty.”
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s visit in Hahoe Village, the festival will be held from May 11, 2019 here. This year, Prince Andrew of England will visit the festival. Meanwhile, during the May festival, the Sunyoujulbulnori will be held in riverside of Hahoe Village.

소나무로 만든 크고 작은 6백여 점의 장승 전국 장승공원과 해외에 설치
1990년 국가 지정 목각장인이 된 김종흥 원장이 지금까지 만든 장승은 6백여 점에 달한다. 이중의 약 60%가 한국의 전국 장승공원에 설치되는 한편 2백여 점은 해외 공원에 설치되었다. 대작의 경우 김종흥 원장이 한 개의 장승을 만드는데 소요되는 시간은 1주일에서 10일이다. 소품은 평균 2-3일이면 완성이 가능하다.
김종흥 원장은 장승을 제작할 때 소나무를 사용한다. 그는 소나무를 선택한 이유에 대해 설명했다.
“소나무는 오래 가고 천연의 향 때문에 사람들에게 가깝게 다가갈 수 있습니다. 우리나라에 소나무 산이 많기 때문에 구하기도 용이합니다.”

“Pine trees can go very close to people because of their long, natural fragrance. Because there are many mountains of pines in our country, it is easy to obtain.”

하회별신탈굿춤 공연 중 김종흥 원장은 파계승 역할을 멋지게 하며 관객들의 박수갈채를 받는다

1990년 안동 하회별신탈굿춤 마을 어른에게 배워 30년간 전수자로 활동
한편 김종흥 원장은 지난 90년 즈음 하회마을에 소재한 안동 하회별신탈굿춤 전수관 어른에게 탈춤을 배웠다. 어릴 때부터 목각인형을 만들고 우리 문화에 심취한 탓에 김종흥 원장은 자연스럽게 탈굿춤에 가까이 다가갔다. 그 이후 오늘까지 탈춤 전수자로 활동하는 김종흥 원장은 하회마을의 주요 문화재인 별신탈굿춤에 대해 소개했다.
“탈춤은 1965년 국가 지정 문화재가 되었습니다. 당시에도 마을에 별신탈굿춤 전수관과 공연장이 있었습니다. 당시에는 특별공연을 했고, 상설공연을 시작한 것은 1995년도부터입니다. 일제시대에 마지막 공연을 했던 별신탈굿춤 1세대 장인께서 복원을 하고 돌아가셨습니다.”

“Mask dance became a nationally designated cultural property in 1965. At that time, there was an extraordinary talent dancing ritual and a performance hall in the village. At that time, I do special performances and started a permanent performances from 1995. The first-generation artisan dancer who performed the last performance in the era of Japanese imperialism was restored it and died.”

6마당의 하회별신탈굿춤 공연장에서 매주 6번 파계승 춤추며
현재 하회별신탈굿춤 전수관에서 무대를 지키는 사람은 30명이다. 예전부터 전수자로부터 배운 사람도 있고, 학교에서 배워 별신탈굿춤 전수자가 된 사람도 있다. 하회별신탈굿춤 전수자인 김종흥 원장은 춤의 역할과 의미에 대해 설명했다.
“하회별신탈굿춤은 서민들이 탈을 쓰고 양반 중심의 사회에서 서민들만이 갖게 되는 애환을 대변하는 놀이입니다. 다만 신분사회에서 애환을 그대로 노출하지 못하고 해학과 풍자를 통해 사회 정의를 부르짓는 일종의 서민놀이라고 볼 수 있습니다.”
하회별신탈굿춤은 모두 9개 마당이 있다. 현재는 무동마당, 주지마당, 백정마당, 할미마당, 파계승마당, 양반선비마당 등 6개 마당이 안동 공연장에서 펼쳐진다.
특히 2019년부터 하회마을 내에 있는 공연장에서 월요일을 제외하고 주 6회 매일 오후 2시 30분부터 공연이 있다. 파계승 역할을 담당하는 김종흥 원장은 자신이 그 역할을 하게 된 계기에 대해 설명했다.
“탈놀이를 하려면 각 역할에 체위가 맞아야 합니다. 고려시대 파계승 모습의 탈을 쓰면 가장 멋있고 화려합니다. 제가 파계승 춤이 좋아서 선택을 했고, 전수자 중 누구보다 파계승과 어울리는 용모를 가지고 있다고 생각합니다.”

At present, there are 30 people who keep the stage at the Hahoe Beulsin-Talugut dancing hall, Some have learned from the past, some have been taught at school, and some have become extra charismatic dancers. Mr. Kim Jong-heung the leader of the Hahoe dancer, talks about the role and meaning of dance.
“Hahoe Beulsin-Talugut dance is a play that talks about the affection that only the common people have in the society where it accustomed to a yangban-centric rule. However, it can be seen as a type of public play that calls social justice through humor and satire without revealing the ghost in the class society.
There are nine courtyards for all of the Hahoe Mask dances. Nowadays, six courtyards such as Mudong Courtyard, Zhuji Courtyard, Baekjeong Courtyard, Halmi Courtyard, Sangnom Courtyard, and Yangbai Sunbi Courtyard are held in Andong’s Mask dances hall.
In particular, there will be performances from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day at the hall in Hahoe Village from 2019. Mr. Kim Jong-heung, who plays the role of a Pagyeseoung, explained the moment when he became the role.
“To play, each role must be in position. It is the most fashionable and gorgeous when you wear a Pagyeseoung’s drobe in the Koryo period. I made a choice it because I like dancing Pagyeseoung and I think I have a look that goes well with it.”

해외 한인축제에 초청되어 장승조각과 탈춤 퍼포먼스로 동포들에게 우리문화 소개
김종흥 원장이 평생 가장 즐겁고 신나는 일을 이야기하라면 단연 해외 한인축제장에서 펼치는 장승조각과 탈춤 퍼포먼스다. 지난 90년대부터 해외 공연을 나가 한국의 문화를 해외 한인과 외국인에게 선보이는 역할을 하고 있는 김종흥 원장은 자랑스럽게 자신의 활동에 대해 소개했다.
“해외에서 한인축제 때 주로 한국 전통문화를 나누고 배우는 차원에서 저를 초청합니다. 현지에서 소나무를 구해놓으면 제가 장승 조각을 하면서 탈춤을 추며 퍼포먼스를 하게 되죠.”
김종흥 원장은 미국, 러시아, 중국, 인도 등 세계 각국의 한인축제장에서 한국 전통문화 컨텐츠를 춤사위로 퍼포먼스를 펼친다. 그럴 때면 축제에 참가한 수많은 관광객들이 사진을 찍기 위해 그의 주변으로 모여들곤 한다. 김종흥 원장은 자신이 펼친 몇 개의 퍼포먼스에 대해 소개했다.
“지난해 강원도 평창동계올림픽 때 국내외 관광객들 앞에서 올림픽 성공기원 퍼포먼스를 했습니다. 매년 음력 3월 삼짇날 봄을 부르는 광화문 축제를 할 때 퍼포먼스를 펼칩니다. 지난 1995년에 김영상 대통령 미국 순방 때 스미소니언 박물관에서 진행한 한국문화공연에 저도 참가했습니다. 이때 도끼로 나무를 자르는 행위를 하면서 아리랑으로 춤도 추었죠. 이 광경을 보고 참석했던 할머니들께서 고국 생각이 나셨던지, 눈물을 많이 흘리시는 모습을 무대에서 볼 수 있었습니다.”
해외에서 펼친 퍼포먼스를 통해 완성된 장승조각은 현재 현지 공원에 전시되어 있다. 미국 버지니아주의 한국정원에는 김종흥 원장이 만든 장승 4개가 서있다. 당시 버지니아주 상원의원이 참석하기도 한 행사에서 한인 음식 전문가가 만든 대형 비빔밥과 한국 장승이 어우러진 한문화 퍼포먼스를 동시에 펼치기도 했다. 이날 김종흥 원장은 현장에서 사람 키만한 나무주걱을 만들어 비빔밥 퍼포먼스를 펼치며 축제의 흥을 한층 돋우기도 했다.
이외에도 김종흥 원장은 프랑스 보르도 한인축제에도 초청되어 장승과 탈춤이 어우러진 퍼포먼스를 펼쳤다. 특히 프랑스 축제에서 그들의 예술에 대한 존중정신을 실감했다고 김종흥 원장은 실토했다.
“저의 춤사위를 본 프랑스인과 한인들이 환호하며 박수를 보내줘서 무척 감격했습니다. 그때 ‘역시 예술의 나라는 다르구나’하고 저도 감동했습니다. 우리가 산업기술로 자동차를 수출하는 것도 필요하지만, 전통문화를 해외에 널리 알리는 것도 국익을 위하는 일이라는 생각이 들었습니다.”

Mr. Kim Jong-heung, who has been playing overseas since the 90’s and introducing Korea’s culture to Korean-born people abroad and foreigners, proudly introduced his activities.
“They invite me to share and learn Korean traditional culture mainly during Korean festival abroad. When they prepare the pine trees in the local area, I take my role by performing mask dance while performing jangseung sculpture.”
Mr. Kim Jong-heung performs Korean traditional culture contents’s dance performance at Korean festivals around the world including USA, Russia, China and India. At that time, a large number of tourists who have participated in the festival gather around him to photograph. Mr. Kim introduced some of his performances.
“Last year, during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in Gangwon Province, I did the performance for anticipating the success of Olympic in front of the domestic and foreign tourists. I do performance when there is a festival in Gwanghwamun which calls spring of March lunar every year. In 1995, I participated in a Korean cultural performance at the Smithsonian Museum during former President Kim Young-sam’s visit to the United States. At that time, I also danced to Arirang while cutting the tree with the ax. I saw the tears of the grandmothers who watched this scene on stage.”
The jangseung sculpture, which has been completed through overseas performance, is now on display in the local park. In the park of 6,000 pyeong, Virginia, USA, there are four statues made by him. At the same time, he performed a Korean culture with a large bibimbap made by a Korean food expert at a Korean festival, while State Senator of Virginia having attended the ceremony. On that day, Mr. Kim Jong-heung made a wooden jangseung that could be a man-sized in the field, spreading the performance of bibimbap.
In addition, Mr. Kim Jong-heung was invited to the Korean festival in Bordeaux, France. In particular, he said he felt the respect for arts in the French festival.
“I was thrilled to be applauded by the cheerful French and Korean people who watched my dance performance. I was also impressed by the feeling ‘the country of art is different too’. We need to export automobiles with industrial technology, but I thought it would be good for national interests to expert the traditional culture abroad.”

지난 30년 동안 장승조각을 하고 하회별신탈굿춤을 추면서 매일 신나게 놀아온 김종흥 원장은 자신의 삶에 대해 말했다.
“20대부터 제가 하고 싶은 일을 찾아서 꾸준히 배우고 실천하며 살아왔습니다. 한국 전통문화에 대한 가치를 이해하고 배우고 나누며 살아온 삶의 시간들이 소중합니다. 저는 이제 제 인생의 꿈을 이루었습니다. 다음 세대들이 우리가 살아온 것처럼 우리 문화의 소중함을 이해하고 배우고 전파하는 역할을 해야 할텐데요! 그것이 요즘 제가 생각하는 일입니다.”
매년 정월 보름날 김종흥 원장은 하회 마을에서 정월대보름 행사 때 마을의 제사장이 되어 춤을 추며 산주 역할을 한다. 그는 800년 동안 이어져 내려온 마을행사를 지휘하며 옛 조상들의 지혜를 새삼 느끼곤 한다. 그의 바람처럼 한국의 문화정책 입안자는 물론 문화 활동을 하는 젊은이들이 한국 전통문화의 가치와 의미를 배우고 익히며 이 땅의 역사성과 고유성을 다음 시대에도 유유히 흐르는 강물처럼 이어져가기를 기대한다.

“Since I was in my 20s, I have been constantly learning and practicing what I want to do. It is important for us to understand the values of Korean traditional culture, to learn and share our lives. I now achieved a dream of my life. The next generation should be able to understand, learn and spread the preciousness of our culture as we have lived! That’s what I think these days.”
Every year on the last day of the lunar January, Mr. Kim Jong-heung acts as a mountain priest in Hahoe Village during the New Year Festival. He leads the 800 year old village event and wakes up at the wisdom of his old ancestors. Like his wishes, we hope that Korean cultural policy makers as well as culturally active young people learn and appreciate the value and meaning of traditional Korean culture and hope to continue the history and uniqueness of Korean culture on this land like a stream flowing in the next generation.
